2013 China-Finland Arctic Marine Technology Forum Opened in Tianjin

On November 19th, 2013, China-Finland Arctic Marine Technology Forum opened in Tianjin Geneva Hotel. The forum was held by Tianjin University, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Tianjin Branch, and Finland Turku Region Development Centre. 20 marine corporations, universities and institutions from Finland with Chinese experts for arctic and marine issues attended the forum. They exchange opinions on research results and technology development related to arctic marine industry, shipbuilding and ocean energy. The aim of the forum is enhancing understanding between Tianjin University and Finland universities and corporations, identifying needs of each other, and promoting marine business cooperation and technology communication between Tianjin and Finland.


The Finland Ambassador to China Jari Gustafsson, the Tianjin Science and Technology Committee Chief JIA Di, the Assistant of Tianjin University President LIU Yaochang and the Vice President of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Tianjin Branch DONG Libin made speeches respectively on the forum. Tianjin University’s professors from the School of Chemical Engineering and the School of Civil Engineering made reports about research findings and the latest technology development of arctic ocean industry, sea engineering, ocean energy, off shore investigation and wind energy. Due to the forum, corporations and universities from Finland and China exchanged their views in details and both sides were willing to have cooperation.


On November 18th, Finland Turku delegation visited Tianjin University and met with school leaders and related officials. The Vice President YUAN Yingjin attended the meeting and he introduced the history, advantages and science technology achievements of Tianjin University. The Director of Finland Turku Region Development Centre NIKO made an introduction to Turku. Some professors in Turku universities introduced their school and academic condition. Both sides made an agreement to have future academy commutations. After the meeting, the delegation visited a key national laboratory for hydraulic engineering moralization and security and school history museum.


Finland has long history in shipbuilding and marine business which are parts of the main high-technology industries. Turku is the second big shipyard and a vital industry base of Finland. It has extraordinarily advanced shipbuilding, machine producing and metal processing industries. China will become a important marine industry country in the future. The visit and the forum make good preparation for future cooperation between China and Finland.
