Harbin Engineering University is among the first mainly-developed universities and one of the first doctorate degree granting universities in China. The university serves as one of the most important centers for talent cultivation and research in the fields of shipbuilding, naval equipment, marine engineering and nuclear power applications (known as “3 seas and 1 nuclear”). Harbin Engineering University also took the lead in founding the China Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering University Alliance and the Ocean Engineering and High-tech Ship Collaborative Innovation Center (http://heu2011.hrbeu.edu.cn). At present, there are 1,804 full-time teachers and 23,500 students attending Harbin Engineering University. Its research strengths lie in underwater robot technology, ship automation, marine power, acoustic positioning, advanced ocean materials and nuclear power simulation.
