Bureau Veritas Supports Delivery of Advanced 175,000-cbm LNG Carrier YANGZE LNG 01
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), a leading international classification society headquartered in France, has announced its successful involvement in the delivery of YANGZE LNG 01, a 175,000-cubic-metre liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier constructed by Yangzijiang Xinfu Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group.

The delivery represents a milestone in high-end shipbuilding, as YANGZE LNG 01 is the first 175,000-cubic-metre membrane-type LNG carrier built by a Chinese private shipyard. Bureau Veritas provided comprehensive classification services and technical support throughout the construction process, contributing to the successful integration of advanced LNG containment, propulsion, and ship safety technologies.
Advanced LNG Containment and Propulsion Technologies
The vessel measures 297 metres in overall length, 46 metres in breadth, and 26.5 metres in depth. It is equipped with the GTT Mark III Flex membrane containment system, designed to ensure the safe and efficient storage and transportation of liquefied natural gas at extremely low temperatures.
One of the vessel's important technical features is its theoretical daily boil-off rate of just 0.085%, reflecting improvements in cargo containment and thermal insulation performance. Reducing LNG boil-off is essential for minimizing cargo losses and improving the overall efficiency of long-distance LNG transportation.
The vessel is powered by two MAN B&W 5G70ME-C10.5-GA-EGR dual-fuel engines equipped with cryogenic units. This propulsion configuration enables operation using either conventional marine fuel oil or natural gas, providing greater operational flexibility while supporting compliance with applicable International Maritime Organization emissions requirements.
Classification and Environmental Performance
Bureau Veritas awarded YANGZE LNG 01 several important class notations, including LNGfuel dualfuel, AVM-DPS for propulsion redundancy, SYS-NEQ-1 for one-person bridge operation, CLEAN SHIP, and GREEN PASSPORT.
These classifications reflect the vessel's technical compliance in areas including propulsion reliability, navigation arrangements, environmental protection, and sustainable vessel management.
Throughout the project, Bureau Veritas worked closely with Yangzijiang Xinfu Shipbuilding to address technical requirements associated with advanced LNG containment systems and dual-fuel propulsion technologies.
With more than 60 years of experience in gas carrier classification, Bureau Veritas has developed extensive expertise in the design review, construction supervision, and operational certification of LNG carriers and other specialized gas transportation vessels.
International Cooperation in Advanced Shipbuilding
The successful completion of YANGZE LNG 01 demonstrates the importance of international collaboration in advancing high-end naval architecture and marine engineering.
The project brought together the shipbuilding capabilities of Yangzijiang Xinfu, the LNG containment technologies of French engineering company GTT, the propulsion technologies of MAN B&W, and the classification expertise of Bureau Veritas.
For the global maritime industry, the project highlights continuing developments in large LNG carrier design, cryogenic cargo containment, energy-efficient propulsion, and integrated safety assessment.
It also reflects the increasing importance of advanced gas carriers in supporting international energy transportation and the development of more efficient maritime logistics.
The cooperation between Bureau Veritas and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group provides a valuable example of how shipyards, technology suppliers, and classification societies can work together to deliver increasingly sophisticated commercial vessels while meeting stringent technical and environmental requirements.
