General Marine Design:

    Centering on the overall design technology, digital shipbuilding technology, virtual simulation technology, special propeller and its application, energy saving and emission reducing ship type design and research, ship cabin environmental engineering, ship-machine-paddle match technology in the design and manufacturing process of ships and marine structures, collaborative innovation and cooperation can be achieved. ICNAME focuses on certain ship and marine engineering core technologies needed throughout the world such as the independent research of CIMS shipbuilding system, research and design of virtual simulation system of ship and marine engineering, thus accelerating the pace into modern shipbuilding mode which concentrates on digital technology.


1. Ship increased wave resistance and stall prediction method

    The current EDDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) put forward by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) has included the ship’s resistance performance in the wave as an assessment. As a result, it becomes a key index of the new ship design to optimize the ship design in order to keep the design speed in the wave. Since most of the large merchant ships sail in low and middle sea conditions, increased resistance in the short wavelength has become an important parameter to evaluate the performance of large vessel. HEU has put forward a new calculation method of increased resistance in the short wavelength based on the theory of total reflection and has made a proposal of calculation method of large ship increased wave resistance and stall prediction on behalf of China. 

2. Multihull Vessel Development Technology

    Harbin Engineering University has carried out research on the overall design, structural design, testing technology and other related aspects for many years. HEU has succeeded in many new hull forms with high speed and high performance, such as Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH), high-speed oval trimaran, wave-piercing catamaran hull, intelligent high-speed taxiing unmanned vessel and so on. The ongoing research includes five-hull vessel form and air-bubble vehicle. HEU has developed many related technologies about high-performance vessel forms, such as resistance calculation forecast, sea keeping calculation forecast, ship form design, and research on special propeller and so on. All the above researches are in the leading position of China.

3.  Vessel virtual simulation technology based on six degrees of freedom

    The vessel virtual simulation system is a distributed and real-time simulation system in a loop. The system consists mainly of several sub-systems, such as analog cockpit, ship motion and device emulation, six degrees of freedom motion platform, visual, coaches and other auxiliary equipment. There are complex data exchanges and rigorous logic relation between sub-systems, forming a large system for data exchange and synchronization. Making use of the virtual simulation system integration technology, HEU has developed many simulators for training personnel to operate certain machine, exercising and evaluating operation process as well as helping onshore auxiliary command decisions. Such simulators include the operation simulator for border patrol vessel, air cushion vehicle, deep sea pipe laying crane vessel and so on.

(2) Shipbuilding CIMS system based on integrated data environment technology;

(3) Research on visual simulation system of marine engineering;

(4) Research on energy efficient ship propulsion technology;

(5) Research on EEDI evaluation and verification technology.
