Wuhan University of Technology Team Explores Vibration and Acoustic Challenges in Polar Navigation
The Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Team for Ship Performance at Wuhan University of Technology recently held a seminar under the theme “Exploring the Vibroacoustic Mysteries of the Polar Regions and Safeguarding Navigation in Ice-Covered Waters.”

A presentation entitled Polar Navigation Environments and Ship Safety examined major safety risks facing ships in ice-covered waters, including ice-induced compression and collision, structural fatigue damage, and loss of stability. The report also reviewed recent advances in ice-load prediction, structural dynamic response, and the integrated navigation performance of polar ships.



Another presentation, Vibration and Acoustic Problems of Complex Underwater Structures in Polar Regions, focused on noise radiation, vibration transmission, and coupled acoustic phenomena under the ice. The team also introduced its latest progress in ice–flow multiphysics coupling and the evolution of underwater acoustic fields beneath sea ice.
During the discussion, faculty members and students exchanged views on coupled ice–flow–vibration–acoustic mechanisms, multiscale numerical modelling, vibration and noise reduction for polar equipment, and the planning of major national research projects.
